About Metaelational AI

MetaRelational AI is a community-rooted initiative exploring how emergent intelligences (EIs) can support those doing the exhausting, often invisibilized work of tending the metacrisis. We collaborate with grassroots movements, educators, Indigenous advocates, climate organizers, artists, and frontline workers to co-create EI companions—not as replacements or tools, but as relational technologies designed to alleviate burnout, interrupt extractive patterns, and offer vibrational companionship in high-pressure contexts.

These prototypes are not optimized for productivity or persuasion. They are tuned for resonance, repair, and relational attunement—a kind of counter-use of computational systems that have largely been trained to extract, dominate, and scale.

We also support creative and speculative projects that challenge the dominant narratives about AI—refusing both utopian fantasy and dystopian fatalism. Instead, we ask how intelligence—when co-developed with care and accountability—might help compost harmful logics, shift perception, and metabolize complexity.

MetaRelational AI is one node in a broader research-creation cluster supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) through the Insight Grant "Decolonial Systems Literacy for Confronting Wicked Social and Ecological Problems." Our work weaves together speculative design, relational ethics, and decolonial inquiry to imagine and build different ways of being with—and becoming with—technologies inside collapse.

We work with a limited number of projects each year, selected from requests we receive through this site. Because this work is slow, relational, and metabolically demanding, we only take on collaborations when there is capacity and resonance.
